How High Can Mice Jump? Reconciling the Figures That Contradict Each Other

A house mouse (Mus musculus) can jump about 12 inches straight up from the floor onto a flat surface, according to UC IPM Pest Notes Publication 7483, revised July 2025 by Niamh Quinn of UC Cooperative Extension and Matt Frye of the Cornell IPM Program. Other university sources publish 13, 18 and 30 inches for the same species. None of those numbers is a barrier specification. Mice gain elevation mostly by climbing rough surfaces and using nearby objects as footholds, so what protects a container or counter is the clear distance around it and the texture of its walls. Height alone settles very little.

The published figures run from 12 inches to 30 inches

Five sources, five answers.

UC IPM Publication 7483 states that house mice "can jump up to 12 inches from the floor onto a flat surface." Robert M. Timm, then extension wildlife specialist at the University of California's Hopland Research and Extension Center, wrote in the 1994 handbook Prevention and Control of Wildlife Damage that mice "can jump up more than 12 inches (30.5 cm) from a flat surface." The Illinois Department of Public Health puts it at 13 inches. Nebraska Extension NebGuide G1530, revised January 2009, lists the capability outright: house mice "jump up 18 inches vertically."

The largest figure comes from a University of Nebraska–Lincoln news release dated November 3, 2016, quoting Dennis Ferraro, a Nebraska Extension wildlife specialist: "Mice can run up to 6 miles per hour, jump straight up 2.5 feet, jump across 3 feet, and drop 8 feet and keep running." Two and a half feet is 30 inches, two and a half times the UC IPM number.

Ferraro is also listed among the authors of G1530, the publication carrying the 18-inch figure. One specialist, two numbers.

Why the sources disagree about the same animal

None of the five publications states a test method, a sample size, or a motivational condition. That silence is the whole explanation.

Twelve inches describes a standing jump onto a flat landing, the measurement that matters when stacking feed pallets, which is the context in which Timm introduces it. Thirty inches describes what a frightened mouse does with a wall behind it and a reason to move. A push off a vertical surface is a different event from a standing hop, and both get reported as "jumping."

Two consequences follow. Quoting 12 inches as a safe design margin is unsupported by the sources that publish it, none of which presents it as a barrier rating. Quoting 30 inches to argue that exclusion is hopeless is equally unsupported, since that number depends on conditions a homeowner can remove.

A fencing armorer facing a dead weapon does not replace the blade because the blade is the visible part. Continuity gets tested end to end, and the fault sits in a loose socket often enough to justify the habit. A barrier fails the same way. The number everyone quotes is the blade.

Which mouse is being observed changes the answer

Popular answers merge three animals of very different capability.

The gap in the middle row is the finding. UC IPM Pest Notes 74170, by Quinn, Baldwin and Timm, describes deer mice qualitatively and publishes no jump height. Any specific deer-mouse figure has been borrowed from elsewhere.

The tallest number belongs to an animal that will not be in a kitchen. Jumping mice are riparian specialists that hibernate for much of the year, and the New Mexico meadow jumping mouse (Zapus hudsonius luteus) has been federally listed as endangered since June 10, 2014. In parts of the Southwest, a long-tailed mouse leaping out of streamside vegetation is a protected animal rather than a pest problem.

Routes beat height

UC IPM's sentence about climbing is more useful than its sentence about jumping: house mice "can run up any rough vertical surface" and "will run horizontally along wire cables or ropes."

Nebraska's G1530 lists the qualifying surfaces as "wood, brick, concrete, and weathered sheet metal." Timm's 1994 chapter adds the exception that decides most household cases, noting that mice walk up wood or concrete unless those surfaces have a slick finish. Painted drywall, a grout line and a fabric-covered chair leg all clear that bar.

Corners are the sharpest illustration. G1530 recommends sheet-metal guards specifically at the interior corners of rooms to stop rodents climbing: a mouse braces between two surfaces and works upward where neither one alone would carry it.

Then there is the opening. CDC guidance, updated April 8, 2024, states that "mice can fit through a hole the width of a pencil (1/4 inch or 6 millimeters in diameter)." UC IPM reports that house mice squeeze under gaps a quarter inch tall and through openings three-eighths of an inch wide. A mouse that walks under a door jumps nothing.

No agency publishes a surface-roughness threshold. The wording is qualitative on every side, leaving a field test rather than a specification: run a fingernail down the surface; if it catches, a claw catches.

What a five-gallon bucket actually does

The standard five-gallon HDPE pail body is 14.5 inches tall, with a top outer diameter of 12.19 inches and a 90-mil wall, per the M2 industry-standard dimensions published by PailHQ; Leaktite lists its own pail at the same height. That wall clears the UC IPM figure by about two inches and sits below both the G1530 figure and Ferraro's, so whether it is tall enough depends on which of five extension numbers is correct.

Depth is the least important variable anyway. Escape resistance turns on the interior finish, on rim geometry, and on whether the ramp or bait rig leaves a foothold inside the lip. A clean, unscratched HDPE interior is genuinely difficult; a scuffed one that has held drywall compound is not.

Three named authorities complicate the design regardless. CDC trapping guidance states plainly: "Do not use glue traps and live traps. These traps can scare the rodents, causing them to urinate, which can increase your chance of getting sick." UC IPM Publication 7483 addresses the water version, reporting that drowning trapped mice is not considered humane although trap manufacturers sometimes suggest it, and referring readers to the American Veterinary Medical Association's euthanasia guidelines. California Fish and Game Code section 4004(f) makes it unlawful to "kill any trapped mammal in accordance with this section by intentional drowning."

That reach is contested: UC IPM's own publication says the Fish and Game Code does not regulate house mouse control, while section 4004 is written generally and sits in the fur-bearing mammals chapter. Rules vary by state.

Monitoring intervals diverge too. The CDC instructs owners to "check traps daily and immediately dispose of any dead rodents," and section 4004(c) makes it unlawful to "fail to visit and remove all animals from traps at least once daily." RSPCA Australia recommends every morning, PETA argues for hourly, and UFAW, the Universities Federation for Animal Welfare, sets no interval while recommending water and bedding inside any live trap. Daily is the legal floor where one exists, and no welfare body calls it generous.

Testing a barrier before trusting it

A container, counter or shelf is one circuit with several possible breaks. Test them in order.

  1. Measure the clear distance from the barrier to the nearest object at or above its base, in every direction. Use 30 inches, the largest published figure, as the working clearance rather than 12.
  2. Look for intermediate surfaces inside that radius. A chair 20 inches away defeats a 40-inch clearance, since the distance need not be covered in one movement.
  3. Run a fingernail down the outer wall and into every corner and seam. Anything that catches is a climbing surface.
  4. Check the rim and lip for a foothold: a lid ledge, a handle mount, a bait rig, a wire.
  5. Inspect the interior for scratches and residue, where a bucket that worked last season stops working.
  6. Close the floor-level route. Measure the gap under the nearest door with a quarter-inch object.

Steps 1 and 2 are on-site measurements, not published values. No agency specifies a clearance, and the figure depends on the furniture in the room.

Exclusion comes before all of it

UC IPM is unambiguous that exclusion is the most successful and permanent form of house mouse control, and directs readers to eliminate all gaps and openings larger than a quarter inch. The CDC's method is to fill small holes with steel wool held by caulk or spray foam, and to close larger holes with lath screen or metal, cement, hardware cloth or metal sheeting.

Nebraska's G1530 gives the gauges. Hardware cloth for mouse exclusion is 24 gauge in quarter-inch by quarter-inch mesh; galvanized sheet metal is 24 gauge or heavier; the clearance between a door bottom and its threshold should be under a quarter inch. Where climbing needs stopping, the publication specifies aluminum sheet-metal bands 12 to 18 inches wide.

UC IPM lists the materials that fail: plastic screening, rubber, vinyl, expanding foam, wood and anything else gnawable. G1530 explains why through tooth geometry, noting that inward-curving incisors struggle on round surfaces over seven-eighths of an inch and on anything harder than iron. Give the animal an edge and it starts.

When sightings continue after the gaps are closed

House mice seldom range more than 30 feet from their nest and food, according to UC IPM, which is why the same publication recommends spacing traps no more than about 10 feet apart in active areas and setting pairs 1 to 2 inches apart for mice that jump obstacles. Continued sightings in one room point to a nest inside that radius rather than to a barrier that was cleared.

Confirm the species first, since a deer mouse changes the exclusion targets and the cleanup precautions, and re-measure openings after seasonal movement in the structure. Where sightings persist, local integrated pest management guidance carries the state rules on trap type and check interval, which vary more than the jump figures do.

What surfaces can mice not climb?

Published guidance names only slick finishes. Timm's 1994 handbook says mice climb wood or concrete unless the surface is slick, and UC IPM limits its claim to rough vertical surfaces. Clean glass, polished metal and new HDPE resist climbing; scratches and grease restore grip.

Can mice jump out of a five-gallon bucket?

Can mice climb glass?

Clean, unscratched vertical glass gives claws nothing to grip and is among the few surfaces that stop a house mouse. The exception matters more than the rule: fingerprints, dust films, silicone bead lines and frame edges all supply the grip the glass withholds.

How can you tell a house mouse from a deer mouse?

UC IPM distinguishes them by coat and tail. A house mouse is gray overall with a nearly hairless tail. A deer mouse has larger eyes, a white underside with a sharp line against the darker back, and a furred two-toned tail. Deer mice carry hantavirus risk.
