Does stelering silver make your neck green? How strong the evidence is

Sterling silver can make a neck green. The stain is a washable copper-salt residue from the 7.5 percent of the alloy that is not silver. Under the US Federal Trade Commission's jewellery guides at 16 CFR 23.5, "sterling" means at least 925/1,000ths pure silver. ISO 9202 lists 925 among the recommended silver finenesses for jewellery. A green mark that wipes off with soap is a surface deposit. Allergic contact dermatitis is a delayed immune reaction that dermatologists time in days.

The evidence for that split is stronger than the rumour that a green neck means the necklace is fake, and weaker than any claim that 925 never stains.

What a 925 or sterling stamp actually guarantees

The millesimal figure 925 means 925 parts silver in 1,000 of alloy by mass, or 92.5 percent silver. The remaining 7.5 percent is other metals, usually copper, which hardens silver enough for chains and clasps. The Hallmarking Act 1973 treats "sterling," used of silver, as fineness 925. ISO 9202 lists 925 among recognised silver grades (with 800, 958, 990 and 999) and treats the stated figure as a minimum.

The US National Stamping Act, 15 U.S.C. 294, allows a tolerance of four parts per thousand on unsoldered sterling, and ten parts per thousand where solder is present. A piece assayed at 921/1,000 without solder is still inside that US legal band. A piece at 900/1,000 is coin silver under 16 CFR 23.5.

The stamp records a fineness claim. The British Hallmarking Council's practical guidance requires a full hallmark on silver above 7.78 grams: sponsor's mark, millesimal fineness, and assay-office mark. Many necklaces sit under that weight, so a lone "925" on a light chain can be a maker's quality mark rather than a London or Birmingham strike. The Goldsmiths' Company Assay Office in London now assays most packets by X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and reports a fineness reading in less than 30 seconds.

Jewellery hallmarks are small. The London Assay Office's size guide runs from 6.00 mm (size A) down to 0.50 mm (size M, small jewellery and jump rings). Trade practice for those punches is a 10× jeweller's loupe, the magnification the Gemological Institute of America uses as its diamond-clarity reference. The Hallmarking Act does not itself mandate 10×. The punch height does.

A plated article must not carry the word "sterling" under 15 U.S.C. 297(a). 16 CFR 23.5(b)(5) requires any silver plating, if so described, to be of "reasonable durability." Silver plate has no numeric micron floor in those guides.

Why copper in sterling silver leaves a green line on the neck

Copper in moist, chloride-bearing sweat forms green copper salts. Those salts dissolve in the film between chain and skin and transfer as a line. The same family of compounds greens copper roofs. The silver itself tarnishes to dark silver sulphide; that film stays on the metal more often than on the wearer.

Sweat pH is the number everyone quotes and the number nobody agrees on. EN 1811, the European reference method for nickel release, immerses the article for one week in artificial sweat of 0.5 percent sodium chloride, 0.1 percent lactic acid and 0.1 percent urea, adjusted to pH 6.5 ± 0.05. A. B. Stefaniak and C. J. Harvey, reviewing 45 formulae against published human data, reported a median whole-body sweat pH of 5.3 (range 2.1 to 8.2). H. Öhman and A. Vahlquist (Acta Dermato-Venereologica, 1994) recorded forearm surface pH of 4.5 ± 0.2 in men and 5.3 ± 0.5 in women. H. Lambers and colleagues (International Journal of Cosmetic Science, 2006) estimated undisturbed skin-surface pH near 4.7. M. J. Patterson, S. D. R. Galloway and M. A. Nimmo (Experimental Physiology, 2000) found regional sweat pH from 6.16 ± 0.71 on the forehead to 5.19 ± 0.62 on the thigh.

The nickel test is run at 6.5. Living necks often sit lower, which is one reason two people can wear the same 925 chain and only one wakes with a green collar line. Lotions, sunscreen, chlorinated water and trapped sweat add chloride and keep the film wet. None of those variables is in the 925 stamp.

Fine silver at 999, listed in ISO 9202, has almost no copper to feed the green salts, and is too soft for a working necklace.

How sterling silver compares with plated base-metal jewellery

The comparison that matters on a green neck is solid 925 against a thin silver coat over brass or copper, and both against a nickel-releasing fashion metal.

The Federal Trade Commission tells marketers what "sterling" and "vermeil" may mean. It does not give a micron figure for silver plate. A fashion flash below the 0.175-micron gold-electroplate floor can still be sold as silver-plated if the seller does not call it sterling. Sweat and friction then open the coat. Solid 925 has no underlayer to expose. It still has 7.5 percent copper at the surface.

REACH Annex XVII Entry 27, as published by the European Chemicals Agency, sets nickel migration at 0.5 µg/cm²/week for necklaces and other skin-contact articles, and 0.2 µg/cm²/week for piercing posts. Coated articles in the first group must hold the 0.5 limit for at least two years of normal use. EN 1811:2023 still uses 0.5; because of measurement uncertainty, a result is treated as compliant at or below 0.88 µg/cm²/week. Two years is a legal wear duration for a nickel-blocking coat. A decorative silver flash has no such clock in the FTC guides.

Is a green neck from sterling silver a stain or an allergy?

A removable green line is a stain. Itching, vesicles and a rash that arrives a day or two later is a different diagnosis.

Simon W. Fage, Annesofie Faurschou and Jacob P. Thyssen, reviewing copper hypersensitivity in Contact Dermatitis in 2014, wrote that "copper is a very weak sensitizer as compared with other metal compounds." In the same paper they reported a weighted average of 3.8 percent positive copper patch tests among subjects already selected for suspected symptoms or exposure. Copper can sensitise. In unselected wearers it rarely does.

Nickel is the metal the law actually limits. Dr Benjamin Ungar, a dermatologist and director of the Alopecia Center of Excellence and of the Rosacea and Seborrheic Dermatitis Clinic at Mount Sinai in New York, told the National Eczema Association: "In allergic contact dermatitis, the reaction can often take two to three days after the exposure." A green collar mark that appears after a hot afternoon and washes off in the sink does not match that clock.

The American Academy of Dermatology, cited by the same briefing, still lists sterling silver among materials to prefer over costume jewellery when metal is a known eczema trigger. That recommendation is about nickel avoidance. If the mark will not wash off, or if swelling and itch follow the chain, the next instrument is a patch test.

How long the surface lasts, and how often the necklace should be cleaned

The sourced numbers on wear duration and cleaning frequency do not line up.

For nickel-coated fashion jewellery sold into the EU and the UK, the legal wear duration of a protective coat is those two years of normal use under REACH Annex XVII Entry 27. For silver plate, the FTC offers no equivalent clock. A silver flash of similar order to gold electroplate's 0.175 micron is a colour, not a lifetime finish. Solid 925 has no coat to exhaust.

Cleaning advice splits in public. McKenzie Santimer, then museum manager at the Gemological Institute of America, told Wirecutter that most jewellery can be cleaned with dish soap and warm water. Jeweller Gizzi, also in Wirecutter, recommended a weekly deep-clean for pieces worn regularly. The Spruce says daily-wear silver is usually fine cleaned every other month. In Vogue, jeweller Nunns's rule is wipe a few times a week if the piece is worn every day, and a deeper clean once a month.

Showering with 925 does not dissolve the silver. It keeps a chloride film on the copper.

How to check the hallmark and stop the green mark

  1. Read the mark under 10× magnification. Look for 925 or "sterling," and, on a UK piece over 7.78 grams, an assay-office symbol. A "925" with no sponsor's mark on a heavy chain is a weaker claim than a London leopard's head or a Birmingham anchor. EPNS, EP and "silver plated" are not sterling.
  2. Wash the green line off the skin with soap and water. If it lifts, it was a salt deposit.
  3. Wipe the necklace with a soft cloth after each wear so sweat does not dry in the links.
  4. Take the chain off for showers, pools, workouts and food-handling. Factory jewellery policies already require that last step.
  5. If itch, vesicles or a delayed red band follow the chain, stop wearing it and take the question to a dermatologist for patch testing.

Rhodium plate on sterling is a real workshop coat; it wears at friction points and then the copper is back.

Can I shower with a 925 sterling silver necklace?

A 925 necklace survives a shower. Water and soap speed copper oxidation in the 7.5 percent of the alloy that is not silver, so a green neck line is more likely after wet wear. Dry the chain afterwards. Repeated soaking also dulls a plated piece once the coat is thin.

Is it safe when sterling silver turns skin green?
